Senior Program Associate, TACSS, DDR

Gina McGovern provides coaching and consulting services to the Weikart Center’s clientele, including Michigan’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC), as a coach for the Technical Assistance and Coaching Support Systems (TACSS) initiative. She is also a member of the Development, Demonstration and Replication team and as such is involved in supporting and enhancing all aspects of Weikart Center program improvement initiatives.

Gina joins the Center after five years teaching middle school mathematics both in Michigan and in Washington, D.C.  During her tenure at Paul Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., Gina served as a Mentor Teacher, where she observed, coached, and offered feedback to ten math teachers on their instructional methods.  In addition, she assisted teachers in analyzing data and making data-based instructional decisions.

Gina’s experience in the after school setting was with Higher Achievement Program in Washington, D.C. where she served as an Assistant Center Director. At this year-round out-of-school time enrichment program for motivated, economically underserved D.C. middle school students, Gina managed a volunteer corps of more than 60 mentors.  She planned and executed Mentor Training Series on lesson planning, scholar management and discipline, and cultural sensitivity.  In addition, she oversaw the programming and established a contagious, positive culture among the youth.

Gina obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology (2002) from Mary Washington College.  She earned a Masters of Education in Educational Policy (2004) from the University of Pennsylvania, where her thesis was a case study of an elementary school teacher’s process of change as she adopted a reform mathematics curriculum.  Gina was honored as a Fellow for the Advancement of Mathematics Education and earned a Masters of Professional Studies in Middle School Mathematics (2008) through the George Washington University with the support of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
